Why I’m taking a 20 year old bike on my trip.

I’ve never sold my first bike. I don’t know if my other bikes are jealous of my first love sitting there next to them, but SPARE is here to stay. Something really big would have to fail on that bike for me to give it up.
Why would I choose a 20 year old 750 over a 3 year old 1200? A friend asked me this the other day, my immediate response was comfort. But as I thought about it more, I realized there is more to the story. For all day comfort, the K75 is my choice with its upright riding position, for both driver and passenger. I also prefer the easy access, full size hard cases on the K75, over the nail-breaking, limited capacity bags on the K12GT.

An equally import, albeit less tangible reason is approachability. The K75 is not a fancy looking bike. People outside of the BMW riding community, don’t really recognize it. It’s a bit generic looking. I feel that people will have less preconceived notions about us on this bike. It doesn’t have the BMW snob factor that my shiny sleek K1200GT has. We'll get enough attention as a mother/daughter on a motorcycle. The bike doesn't need to be the center of attention.

You can get it all on eBay

I remember one early morning fill up at a gas station Middle-O-Nowhere, USA; a regular was leaning against the door jam as I came in to pay for my gas. “What kinda bike is that?” He inquired about my K1100LT. “It’s a BMW” I responded. “Oh, that’s the Cadillac of bike”. Well, actually it’s the BMW of bikes…but I kept that thought to myself.

One of the items on my trip list is a laptop; a durable laptop that won’t complain about being thrown in a side case, one that will endure the vibration (vibration on a K bike?) and heat. It did not take much research to learn that the Panasonic Toughbook sets the standard for tough laptops. But I almost dismissed the practicality of getting the best. A new Toughbook is over $2,000 and even in the used market they hovered around $1,000; neither price was consistent with my desire to “do more with less”.

Resigned to pick up a used Dell on eBay, I surfed one more time for a laptop with a smaller footprint, and up popped the Toughbook again. This time at a price point I could not believe. With an hour left on the auction, on a Sunday morning, the bid was only at $250. I read the posting carefully, and put in my offer…and scored. For under $300, I’ll be happily testing out the vibration worthiness of a Panasonic Toughbook CF-28 this summer!

Where are you from?

“Where are you from?” As part of my trip planning, I’ll be looking at the answer to this question. I hope to offer some perspective and give visitors a glimpse at life here.

The answer to this common question is relative to where I am when the question is asked. If I am in New Hampshire at the time, the answer is Nashua.

Mapquest tells me there are 8 Nashua’s in the US. (NH, IA, MN, MT, CA, FL, MO & PA). 5 of them are in or near my route. I hope we have a chance to visit them. I did get to Nashua, MT in 2004. It was nothing like my home town!

Going-To-The-Sun Road

I'm fascinated by Google Earth . I start out looking for one thing and end up touring around the earth.
Today, I looked up Glacier National Park, MT. Going-To-The-Sun Road is one of the destination points of our trip. I rode it in 2004. This time around, I want to learn more about the park, and spend more time exploring & photographing the amazing sites there.

Gear for the Riders

I have all these mental check lists of things I need to get for our trip.
This far out from the start I can leave those check lists in my head; but I need to start taking action on them.
Lisa need some gear this year. Boots, pants and maybe a jacket. I really like the idea of us having matching gear, but that will be expensive. I hope to go used on the boots and pants.
I'm waiting on MAX to get the Rev'it Line, it would be great to get women's pants!
Matching helmets for sure. I'm interested in the Nolan helmets with built in communication.

I need a new riding suit as well. I don't have anything appropriate for track day. I better get moving on that...I'm not that easy to fit!

Oh My Blog

On July 12 2004 I arrived at the gates of Glacier National Park in Montana. It had taken me 4.5 days to get there from my home in Nashua, NH. As I took in the mountains before me I immediately felt that I had to share this with my daughter Lisa.
That dream is coming together this year.
This blog is one small task on my to do list in preparing for that trip.
